Week 25/ a short one

Book/story

The late professor Hans Rosling left an impressive legacy, like this:

And I just finished reading the book he wrote with his son and daughter-in-law, and I highly recommend it to everyone. Only by facing our ignorance can we improve.

Week 24/ I like my (new) city

Food
My favorite vegetarian meal so far this week was this nice mix of patatas bravas, oven-grilled Turkish peppers and an omelette with home made sauce and aioli. The wine was also not bad.

Insta/Twitter/YouTube
I’ve been following bodyposipanda for a while on Instagram, and she always cheers me up and gives me a reality check at the same time. I’d embed it, but I just cannot get it to work?

Personal
On Saturday I went in to the weekly market in the centre of Leiden, and as I was walking back to my bike, I couldn’t help thinking “it’s so pretty here”. Love it.

I’m easily amused (another TS post)

It’s been a while since there was a TS post, so here we go!

I’m home alone (woe living with a sales person at a bank, so much “representation” (no, but seriously, I like my alone time)) and may have had several glasses of wine with my dinner. Now I’m watching Youtube (of course) and this. This cracks me up – one of the clips is from some Dutch talent show, featuring Nick & Simon. They are very well known here, but the thing is, I have no idea who is who of the two since they always appear together. Look, they even have a joint chair cause they’re inseparable!

There’s also a new podcast from Swedish Radio (SR) about TS. I equally want to listen to it as not. Yes because TS, no because it’s called “Amerikas hämndlystna sweetheart” (idk, “America’s revengeful sweetheart”?)

Week 23/ a lazy one

Music
Song I’d recommend:

Song I’ve had stuck in my brain cause a colleague sang it:

Book
I read a book! This one, as recommended by Lisa:

Personal
Has friends over last night, with (way too much) tapas, sangria, and desserts.

Plans
After having been like “no, I can’t go to Sweden during summer cause lack of vacation days”, I actually counted the days I had left and it turns out… I can go? So I’ve quickly booked a week in August when both my brothers are off too. Family time galore!

Pretty vs Functional

Where I work, they may be a lot of Dutch people (you know, since we’re in the Netherlands), but the company is American. This is noticeable in some things like our system (Oracle, not the European SAP) and the voice that greets you when calling the general phone. I swear it’s the most American sounding man possible. Anyway. We also use Apple. While I realize that’s not in itself more American than Windows, in our line of business, it seems as though not a lot of European companies use it. Because NOTHING WORKS. FedEx interface? – Go to this virtual Windows machine. TNT interface? – Go to this other Windows machine. Create export documents? – Use that first Windows interface again, but with a different browser.

As of last year, they’ve opened a window (no pun intended) for us to choose computer when we get a new one – Apple or Dell. It breaks my heart a little, because the UI of Apple has completely won me over, and I use it at home now too, but I did this:

The last time I used a Windows machine was 2013, soooo, let’s say it’s not super smooth yet? There are also some Apple functionalities that I miss, and the stupid VPN is being a pain. But apart from that – stuff works. The computer is friggin’ ugly, but it works.

Week 22 / bye bye May

Podcast episode:
David Tennant returned to Nerdist (or, I guess, ID10t, as it’s renamed into). Listen here.

App
This is a bit irrelevant, since most of the readers of this blog are not in NL, but anyway. I love my bank’s app. It’s SO HANDY. Intuitive, forward thinking, and very very helpful. Thank you ING! (Note: I stole the picture online, cause you can’t make screenshots when the app is running.)

Makeup/beauty:
So, I seem to have an allergic reaction to something in my skincare drawer. Suddenly happened yesterday, and I’ve narrowed it down, to either being this serum (bought at the pharmacy and for sensitive skin though, is that even possibly the culprit?) or a reaction between two of the parts I use (one of which would be this same serum). None of the other components are new. Had a nice red face yesterday though…

Mask
I should get better at using masks, but it’s a work in progress. I did use two this week: this one, my only recurring one, and this:

It was fine. Can’t say I noticed any lasting effect, but my face did feel soothed after using it.

Personal
On Friday we signed the final papers for selling the “old” house. The buyers are the same age we were when buying it, and they seem really enthusiastic about it, so that’s very nice. We now officially only own 1 house. Phew.

Question:
Do I have the courage to sign up for lessons to learn and play an instrument? There’s a kid in our new neighborhood who’s learning to play violin, and it sounds like… there’s room for improvement. But do I dare/want to be in the same seat as an adult?
